Locksmith Awareness: Protect Yourself from Scams

Not every locksmith is who they claim to be. Learn how to spot scams, verify credentials, and choose a trusted professional.

Locksmith Scams Are More Common Than You Think

Every year, thousands of Americans fall victim to locksmith scams. Fraudulent locksmiths advertise low prices online, then show up and demand hundreds of dollars — or damage your locks to force unnecessary replacements.

At Hillsborough Lock and Key, we've served the Tampa community for over 27 years. We believe an informed customer is a protected customer. Use this guide to recognize the warning signs and make a safe choice.

Red Flags to Watch For

Unusually Low Advertised Prices

Ads promising $15–$35 lockouts are almost always bait-and-switch. Once on-site, scammers inflate the bill with hidden fees, "special" tools, or unnecessary lock replacements.

No Local Address or Unmarked Vehicle

Legitimate locksmiths operate from a real location. If the technician arrives in an unmarked car with no company ID or uniform, that's a serious warning sign.

Can't Show a License

Florida requires locksmiths to be licensed. If a technician can't produce a valid license number on the spot, do not let them work on your locks.

Insists on Drilling When It Isn't Necessary

A skilled locksmith can open most locks without drilling. Scammers often drill immediately to justify selling you a new lock at an inflated price.

Demands Cash Only

Reputable businesses accept multiple forms of payment. A cash-only demand is a common tactic to avoid accountability and make disputes impossible.

Price Changes After Arrival

If the quoted price suddenly doubles or triples once the technician is at your door, you are likely dealing with a scammer. Get the price in writing before work begins.

Why Licensing, Bonding & Insurance Matter

Florida law requires all locksmiths to hold a valid locksmith license. Licensing ensures the technician has passed background checks, demonstrated competency, and is accountable to a regulatory body.

Bonding protects you financially if a locksmith causes damage or acts dishonestly. Insurance covers accidents on your property. Without these protections, you have little recourse if something goes wrong.
